Platform for the telecommunication and local area network (LAN) of the real estate of the German of Bundestag – Gigabit Ethernet Network with approximately 15,000 ports
In the European call for tender of the Bundesbaugesellschaft Berlin mbH NK Networks & Services was successful with its concept of a network design based on components by Cisco Systems.
The new Gigabit Ethernet Network offers unrestricted compatibility of all technical components and meets all demands of the different user groups – from the delegates to the technical services of the building management. On basis of the new technology all types of communication – from data transmission over the exchange of images and videos up to voice services – can be handled in one convergent network on the campus. For the future the Gigabit Ethernet technology offers the possibility to upgrade the telephone system of the German Bundestag, presently operated through an ISDN-network, to a hybrid system with internet telephony functionality (Voice over IP).
According to the migration plan the complete campus infrastructure of the Bundestag will be migrated to the new technology during the parliament summer vacation 2008. The network comprises approximately 25 buildings and over 5,000 users.
Before the move of the German Bundestag to Berlin in 1999 the NK network specialists had already received the public order for the Bundestag ATM network with Cisco Systems. In the meantime, the technical system standards have advanced and spare parts for the existing infrastructure will soon no longer be available.
